Disabled Choreographers Selected for Commissioned Works

Dancing Wheels is pleased to introduce the disabled choreographers selected to create commissioned pieces for Dancing Wheels’ June 14, 2019 concert at the Allen Theater in Cleveland’s Playhouse Square. These choreographers will premiere their works during the landmark concert entitled “Reverse * Reboot * Reveal.”

Mr. Marc Brew, Artistic Director of AXIS Dance Company, accepted our commission of his work in the category of Advanced Choreography, and we are thrilled to have his contributions.

Meet Marc Brew:

Acclaimed International choreographer and AXIS Artistic Director Marc Brew trained as a professional dancer at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School and The Australian Ballet School. He has been working in the UK and Internationally for the past 20 years as a director, choreographer, dancer, teacher and speaker with the Australian Ballet Company, State Theatre Ballet Company of South Africa, Infinity Dance Theatre, CandoCo Dance Company and AXIS Dance Company. Marc was Associate Director with Scottish Dance Theatre, Associate Artistic Director with Ballet Cymru in Wales and was Associate Artist in 2015 at Tramway Theatre in Glasgow. Since 2008 Marc has been dedicating time to his own choreography with Marc Brew Company.

Mid-Range Category Choreographer:  Antoine Hunter

A Bay Area native, Mr. Antoine Hunter is an award-winning African-American Deaf producer, choreographer, film/theater actor, dancer, dance instructor, model, poet, speaker, mentor and Deaf advocate. Mr Hunter received his training in dance and acting at Skyline High School Oakland, Ca, California Institute of the Arts(CalArts),and Paul Taylor Dance School in NYC.

He teaches dance and ASL in both Hearing and Deaf communities and is the founder and artistic director of Urban Jazz Dance Company and has been producing the Bay Area International Deaf Dance Festival since 2013.

Emerging Category Choreographer: Laurel Lawson

Laurel Lawson found in dance a pursuit that combined her lifelong love of athleticism and art.  After her first modern dance class, she fell in love with the challenge and creative discipline required and chose to pursue a professional career in dance.
Laurel joined Full Radius Dance in January of 2004, and she has performed in Atlanta and around the world with the company as well as with other collaborations and solo projects.
In addition to performing, choreographing, and teaching dance, Laurel is also a lifelong advocate, a public speaker,  a member of the USA Women’s Developmental Sled Hockey team, and a product designer and co-founder of an engineering consultancy based in Decatur, Georgia.
