Class Descriptions
Ballet participants of all levels, abilities, and ages 13+ will focus on the basics of ballet technique, proper body alignment, French terminology, and musicality. All ballet classes offered are designed to challenge each participant’s movement quality, muscular conditioning, flexibility, and balance, which serve as a valuable foundation for a variety of other physical activities.
Capoeira is a martial art disguised as dance. This class open to all levels and abilities, ages 10+.
Conditioning, open to adults/teens and people of all abilities and levels, incorporates various movement practices (such as Yoga, Pilates, weight resistance training, and cardio) for stretching and strengthening the body.
Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. This class is open to all levels and abilities, ages 13+.
DW Community Class is an open class where participants can register to attend the entire 12-week session or participate on a drop-in basis. The instructor will lead a class that incorporates music and movement for students to participate in a fun and engaging environment. This class is open to students ages 6 through adult of all abilities. No prior dance experience is necessary.
Hip-Hop allows participants ages 10+ to cultivate their expressive potential through movement that is most often paired with familiar and popular music. This class infuses the latest styles of street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. Participants are free and encouraged to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements.
Jazz Funk (also called Street Jazz) borrows movement from hip-hop, lyrical, jazz, and modern. Open Level Jazz Funk incorporates a variety of qualities these styles offer and creates a fusion that is both fun and expressive. This class is tailored to students with some prior dance experience, all abilities, and ages 13+,
Performance Ensemble is an opportunity for students of the School of Dancing Wheels to join the professional company on stage for gala and story ballet performances and to represent the organization in performances at community events geared toward accessibility. This group of committed students is challenged to be active participants in the creative process of new works, eagerly rehearses choreography in which they will perform, and represents the Dancing Wheels Company & School in both spirit and performance.
Tap is an open level and all-abilities class for adults/teens that focuses on tap dance skills, sounds, and rhythms in a fun and inclusive environment. Modifications for seated tappers using arms/hands and/or legs/feet will be offered. Recommended attire is comfortable clothes in which you can move. Tap shoes are highly recommended for stand-up dancers, while bare hands are encouraged for sit-down dancers.
Wheelchair Technique is taught by Dancing Wheels Company certified physically integrated dance teachers and company members. This class allows students of all abilities to workshop and gain a deeper understanding of the mechanics involved in being a “sit-down” dancer. Techniques taught include propulsions, wheelie bumps & balances, and turns.
Youth Combo Class offers a combination of dance genres like ballet, jazz, tap plus creative movement and other fun games appropriate for the students’ level to allow them to try different techniques and have an opportunity to dance with their friends.
