Rehearsal Director Job Description

This position requires the following skills sets:

  • A sound knowledge of dance in most common genres of dance (i.e.: ballet, modern, contemporary).
  • Experience in physically integrated dance, in its practice and execution
  • Good communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to identify problems and issues and quickly formulate resolution that meet the organization’s constraints
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize

Essential Duties:

  • Work in tandem with the Artistic Director and Education Director to determine appropriate repertory to be rehearsed on a weekly basis.
  • Rehearse the Company Monday through Friday (when Company is not on tour) from 12:00–3:00 PM.
  • Meet with the Artistic Director and Education Director to plan out weekly schedules and to determine any issues that may arise.
  • Assist in determining repertory for tours.
  • Assist in casting pieces being performed.
  • Work with choreographers (when creating new works) to understand and execute notes regarding the intention of their piece.
  • Study videos and notes to restage works keeping the intention and specific technique of the choreographer pure to its original intention.
  • Keep dancers engaged and motivated in rehearsals by delegating, communicating, and assigning repertory that needs to be restaged.
  • When needed, tour with the Company to assist in rehearsals and spacing for mainstage performances.

Administrative Duties

  • Emails – Communication pertaining to future tours, staying in the loop for information that would aid/effect rehearsal and preparation for performances/tours, approving tour calendars, etc.
  • Communicate with full-time contracted dancers, guest artists, choreographers, and apprentices regarding their availability.
  • Upload rehearsal videos and notes, properly label and archive the footage to Google Drive sheets, and send them out to the dancers.
  • Communication and scheduling with the lighting designer in preparation for home performances including dancer choreographer concerts, galas, and winter shows.
  • Setting up dancer meetings and signup sheets.
  • Maintains artistic records and documentation on all works that enter the repertoire.

This is considered a salaried position. Pay is commensurate with experience. Administrative duties are billable hours paid by invoicing biweekly.
