Physically Integrated Dance Teacher Certification

Inclusive Dance meets Accessible Instruction. As a pioneering dance company making professional dance accessible for all, Dancing Wheels now makes its methodolgies accessible for instructors interested in teaching inclusive dance.

Dancing Wheels introduces its first Physically Integrated Dance Teacher Certification Levels 1 and 2, and individualized programs including a comprehensive, foundational workshop in the Dancing Wheels methodology.

Introductory Workshop

Description:

This 9-hour introductory workshop provides a comprehensive overview of the principles and practices of the Dancing Wheels teacher training method. It offers insights into the world of physically integrated dance history, terminology, wheelchair configuration, and accessibility. Participants will have an opportunity for hands-on experience in wheelchair maneuverability relating to dance and movement translation.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Appreciate and describe the historical, social, cultural, and artistic context of physically integrated dance.
  2. Use current/appropriate physically integrated dance terminology and protocols when working in the field.
  3. Explain the various roles and opportunities available within physically integrated dance.
  4. Evaluate a dance space for accessibility and make/implement recommendations for improvement.
  5. Apply knowledge of wheelchair mechanics to safely and artistically operate a wheelchair in a dance environment.
  6. Explain how movement translation is applied to and benefits individuals with physical disabilities.
  7. Translate  a dance combination for stand-up and sit-down dancers.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion at the conclusion of this 9-hour workshop designed for dance students, dance educators, physical education teachers, physical therapists, and dance enthusiasts.

Teacher Certification Level 1

Description:

This first-of-its-kind, 40-hour intensive training is ideal for dance educators. Participants will learn how to apply the foundational principles of Dancing Wheels’ ground-breaking methodologies to incorporate physically integrated in their own dance practices.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply their knowledge to instruct students in the historical, social, cultural, and artistic context which surrounding disabilities.
  2. Apply their knowledge to instruct students in appropriate physically integrated dance terminology and protocols.
  3. Evaluate a dance training and performance space for accessibility and make/implement appropriate recommendations for improvement.
  4. Gain a working knowledge of wheelchair mechanics related to various physical disabilities to teach students how to safely and artistically maneuver a wheelchair in a dance environment.
  5. Create a lesson plan for an inclusive dance class using the Dancing Wheels methodology.
  6. Teach a beginner-to-intermediate level dance class (in the genre of your choosing) using the Dancing Wheels methodology.

To receive certification, Level 1 participants are assessed on the established learning outcomes. Certification is for 3 years and would require recertification at 3 year intervals.

Tuition: $1,250

Teacher Certification Level 2

Description:

This 40-hour intensive training for dance educators builds on Level 1 and uses the Dancing Wheels foundational principles and training method as a framework for creative inquiry and advanced practice.

Participants re-contextualize traditional modes of dance partnering and dance-making within a physically integrated environment and hone skills in developing translations for intermediate-to-advanced physically integrated dance classes.

The Level 2 intensive provides continued and advanced certification training for dance educators in the Dancing Wheels methodology. Participants must have obtained a Level 1 Certification as a prerequisite to this program.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  1. Teach an advanced level dance class (in the genre of your choosing) using the Dancing Wheels methodology.
  2. Apply partnering techniques using the Dancing Wheels methodology.
  3. Develop a basic compositional structure(s) using the Dancing Wheels methodology.

To receive certification, Level 2 participants are assessed on the established learning outcomes. Certification is for 3 years and would require recertification at 3-year intervals.

Tuition: $1,250
Discount package – $2,250 when Levels 1 and 2 are taken within a year.

Individualized Training

Description:

This is a fully customized program for dance educators and/or choreographers who desire an extended and immersive experience in physically integrated dance using the Dancing Wheels training methodology.

This program is ideal for those teaching dance at a college or university, who may be unable to attend our teacher training when it is offered. A customized option can be developed to fit a sabbatical or seasonal break.

Learning Outcomes:

A consultative approach will be used to determine the participant’s your current level, your future goals and appropriate learning approaches and timeline. Possible approaches include:

  • Several week-long intensive training sessions with the Company and its primary teachers.
  • Instruction from the Company during a one-year residency.
  • A combination of learning through virtual classes and on-site training in the Dancing Wheels studios.
  • A choreographic residency with the Dancing Wheels Company.

Learning outcomes and a learning plan will be developed and approved by both parties before beginning.

Tuition: Determined by agreed-upon learning outcomes and time constraints.
